Ramon [Music] get other guys the border restrictions to be able to travel into some of the regional areas in Western Australia they’ve just recently been lifted her only and eased about a week ago so I took the opportunity and packed up my camera gear and the car and took off into the wing belt to try and explore some of the Salt Lake’s then I’m out east of Perth in places like walking hills those sort of places they’re really tiny little that we built towns you got lots of lots of character but we’re out here to chase down some of the salt lakes and some of the patterns and stuff like that with my drying that might be a really good opportunity to kind of update you on my drone and and how I approach taking some of the drone photography that I do so that’s what we’re going to do in this video [Music] and I just got hit by Stein so you can see there that that there is the mark that was created by a stone that was kicked up by a truck as it passed by virtually that can happen out here it can be a bit of a pain Gaz that is right in my line of sight when I’m driving the car so I’m gonna have to get that fixed [Music] [Music] it’s a beautiful day at the moment it’s not a cloud in the sky and it’s midday it’s just after lunch and I couldn’t be taking my normal style of landscape images at this time of the day because the light is just too harsh that’s one of the great things about the drone photography is that having the scene well-lit can actually be quite an advantage and the fact that there’s no clouds in the sky it doesn’t matter because I’m not pointing the camera at the sky so that’s one of the things that I really really like about drone photography is that it can be done at different times of the day in conditions that don’t necessarily make the good landscape photography bad drone photography it’s really really good as the Sun of course since you can’t play around with the light a little bit the shadow started get thrown out a little bit longer and you can still shoot right up until the Sun has set and even after that as well so I I think quite a lot about the different light conditions when I shoot my drone photography I really enjoy the fact that even if there’s no clouds in the sky the Sun is overhead and the light is quite harsh that I can still take drone images [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] money out here for a couple of days but I met up with another photographer a mate of mine called Matt fields he’s on Instagram I’ll leave a link in the description and at the bottom of this video he’s a chef and he’s both a chef down in Margaret River and also in the Kimberley’s and when he’s up in the Kimberley’s he’s camping up there and takes just amazing photos with his camera and also his drone so we met up a couple of days ago and we’ve been scouting out this area camping in different locations and checking out the different Salt Lake’s what’s amazing about this area is that the Salt Lake’s are so different some of them are just plain white and quite small but others are quite large and they’ve got some interesting features and textures on the side as the waters washed through and we’re also looking for salt lakes that have a little bit of color in them as well well these flies so that’s what we’re looking for both texture and color some of the Salt Lake’s have got a little bit of water in them but others are quite dry we’re thinking this is going to be one of the last opportunities to photograph the Salt Lake’s like they are because it’s been pretty dry and Western Australia up until pretty much tomorrow where it’s forecast to be a lot of rain come through from the West so we’re imagining that a lot of these Salt Lake’s are going to be absolutely chock-a-block full of water which will create a different different effect but our aim is to get here while they’re nice and dry and there’s some beautiful textures and cracks opening up as the salt lakes have dried out anyway I’ll grab the drone and we’ll set up [Music] [Music] so Matt and I found this little area and what drew us to this particular Salt Lake is not its size but just the the color on Google Maps it’s quite orange but it’s not orange at the moment it’s dried up and I think what that’s done has intensified some of the colors so it didn’t look too much as we were driving past the the lake and not a lot of salt lakes do look any good as you’re just driving past them but once you get the drone up they become completely different and and that’s where you can see all the colors and the textures but what caught our eye on this particular one is that we could see the tinges of orange and Pink’s and even reds in in the lake and so I’ve already had the the drone up I’ve had a bit of a scout around that’s what I tend to do on one battery and then I’ll save a second battery for the the images so I’ve now just changed over batteries I’ve got the drone back up there and now where we’re flying over to where the Salt Lake is so this is the Salt Lake here and as you can see there’s this quite interesting little wash that I’ve now just kind of centered here in the image and it makes for a really nice shot I’m just trying to play around a little bit with the lines I’ve got the side of the Salt Lake kind of coming in from the right hand corner there’s a little bit of color there I think I’ll go and investigate that a little bit more in a second you go just turn around just a fraction there you go so what I’ve done here with the composition is I’ve got the line coming in from the right hand side I’ve got this wash in the middle of my image and there’s some beautiful detail there I’ve got a little bit of bush in the middle down at the bottom I’ve got this tree just on the top left-hand corner so I think I’ll just flip over from the video and we’ll go to the camera now as you can see from the shutters from the shutter button I’ve got the camera automatically in auto exposure bracketing mode and so I take three shots every time I take an image I’m happy with that composition so I’m just going to quickly take that now and then I just might scoot around a little bit more and see whether we can get some of the other some of the other textures here is quite it’s quite a beautiful little a little Salt Lake here so I’ve now just moved around a little bit more I just might move down a little bit so I’ve now got this wash in the in the foreground which is kind of leading the eye in and I’m just kind of positioning the drone so it’s taking out any of the farmland on either side I’ve got some bush some some of the bushes and trees on the left-hand side and the right-hand side and I’m going to take that shot as well because I quite like that also [Music] so one of the things that I started doing when I was taking photos with the drone was always having the camera directly down we’re definitely going to take one that’s directly down but I’m always trying to push myself a little bit and bring the camera up a little bit so that it’s looking at the features add a little bit of an angle really really helpful out here with the Salt Lake’s because the Salt Lake’s are so massive have come bringing the camera up at a bit of an angle means that I can get more of the Salt Lake in the shot okay so with that taken I’m now going to move down and closer and I am actually going to bring the camera angle straight down now look at that isn’t that amazing that is just incredible the amount of details and all the cracks and the colors you can see the colors there right there’s some you can see the Reds there that that strong vein of red coming through from the right-hand side you can see tinges of Pink’s just around that then there’s that that bluish area gray blueish area that I think is actually puddles of water still sitting just on top of the salt bear so I just think that that’s that is just magnificent now what I’ve done with the composition here is I’m going for a little bit more of an abstract composition it it almost looks like this is a painting I’ve cut out a little bit of the the wash in the bottom right hand corner but I quite like that and then I’ve got so I’ve got most of the wash in the right hand coming up into the middle and then I’ve got these two brown areas and they kind of balancing each other out you can see that I’ve put one in the bottom left hand corner and one in the top right hand corner and that’s that’s on purpose that’s to try and balance this image out a little bit so I’m happy with that composition I’m going to quickly take that [Music] and then I might go down even closely see I’m only I’m only 30 meters above this Salt Lake and that’s the other thing that I kept on thinking was that I had to go as high as I possibly can but what you miss out on when you go really really high is all of these fantastic details but I’m going to come down even even even closer now and see whether I can pick up some of the other details which are in this in this lake look at those cracks they are just amazing I’m not too sure I think I’ll take a quick image here where I’ve just got that brown bit just coming out through here I’ll take that not too sure where this is going to work but then once I’ve done that I’m going to just move across a little bit here we go I’ll get this there we go hopefully that’s a little bit more balanced that there I’ll just shift it to the side so again I’ve got both those brown bits of land balanced in the top right hand corner in the bottom left hand corner and then I’ve got this sweeping bit of salt the salt lake or the wash moving from the right hand corner through to up to the top and then round to the top left hand corner so I’m happy with that shot as well so I’ll just quickly take that all so now what I also noticed over here is I just bring this up a little bit is look at that beautiful bit of Salt Lake just there now I’ve just pulled it back a little bit and I’ve also I pulled the drone back a little bit and I’ve also lifted the angle of the camera just up a little bit and again I’m just trying to make sure that I’m not always shooting down but that I’m shooting I’m shooting a at an angle so the it’s not all the way up so if I was to bring the camera all the way up it would be the horizon would be you know there so that’s not what I want so I want to bring it down so I’m bringing you down at an angle and I’m cutting out the the horizon because I just don’t think that that is going to really give much to the image if you like so I’m bringing the edge of the Salt Lake pretty much from the the middle down the bottom slightly to the right I’m bringing it out further to the right-hand side and then it swings around and disappears in the top left-hand corner so I’ll make sure that I’m focused I’ve all I got to make sure that I’m focused before I take the shot so I just tap where I want to focus the image I just might tap over over there that’s nice and then I’ll grab that shot [Music] now as you can see there is a little bit more color over here on the right look at that that is just amazing and what’s really impressive is that color over in the top left-hand corner as well so I’m going to leave that in the image and I’m quite happy with that kind of taking it from the center and again I’m taking the edge of the lake straight up the center and then curving it round to the left-hand side so once that’s focus I’ll take that shot [Music] and then quickly moving on actually while we’re here I might just drag drag the camera down so it’s right facing right down and then I might take this opportunity to just grab this shot here again I’m only 30 meters above 35 meters above the above the basalt Lake here so that’s not too bad so I’ve got a combination of the bull and then the edge of the lake and then you’ve got the Salt Lake there make sure that that is focused and then I’ll take that shot [Music] [Music] and then I might pull the camera back up again and now we’re going to head off to where this purple area is over here because this looks really interesting so for this shot I might pull up a little bit because you can see how you can see how large this wash is this is quite a large wash fantastic so I’m going to try and keep the Salt Lake up a Salt Lake they’re coming around I’m just messing around with the orientation look at that that that looks amazing I’m really happy with that I’m going to come down a little bit I’m going to come across a little bit now pretty much got the lake I’m aiming for it to roughly be in the coming up from the bottom of the image on the right hand third and then disappearing pretty much on the center on the left hand side and then you’ve got this wash that’s come out this little creek that’s come out and all of those features over on the right the top right hand third so I’m going to quickly take that shot once I am focused [Music] as you can see we’ve got plenty of wind around both here on the ground and also up in the air there so I’m trying to move as quickly as I possibly can we’ll see whether we can just move around a little bit and get that image again maybe like this this looks like quite a interesting little shot here [Applause] mmm not too sure what to do here I’m gonna try and take that I’m gonna try to take the bush out on the top right on top left-hand corner and actually maybe I’ll just put a little bit of Bush in there I might crop that out later in post but how’s that for slightly a different shot now I’m moving up to around about 90 meters so I do actually move up and down and and try and see whether I can get different levels of detail [Music] I’m gonna start bringing it back down again because I think there is another shot here that might look quite nice just having a quick look at my battery I’m down to just under 40 percent so I just need to move a little bit quick here so what I’m going to do here is I’ve got this nice little bend that I think what I’ll do is I’ll leave it kind of in the center and moving away to the right disappearing on that top top right hand third and and then there’s all these patterns and wisps of salt that is has obviously dried up on me on the bed there so I’ll focus that and then take that shot there [Music] [Music] all right there is a beautiful little spot here that I just want to try and zoom in and get a little bit of a subtlety of the colors here and maybe bring up some of some other detail there we go what I’m going to do is I’m going to try and split that right down the middle so this will end up probably being perhaps portrait maybe I’ll leave it in landscape I’m not 100% sure but it’s got a nice little bend to it and I just like how there’s so much detail and texture in the bottom half which is quite dark with the texture being light and then in the top half the background is light and the texture is is darker and of course I’ve got this rule this vein of red so again I’ll take that shot [Music] I’m actually really happy with with that shot there and I’m only 26 meters above the salt lake so I’m actually quite quite close [Music] so yeah I think with that I might have a quick bit more of a look around see whether I can find anything else before I need to bring the drone in and and check out some of the images just before I show you some of the other images that I captured I just wanted to thank Squarespace for sponsoring this video I was recently updating my website and I was reminded about how easy it is to do so with Squarespace whether you’re adding a new image or a new blog post 0.06 grab the drone and we&;ll set up
0.06 [Music]
0.06 [Music]
0.06 so Matt and I found this little area and
0.06 what drew us to this particular Salt
0.06 Lake is not its size but just the the
0.06 color on Google Maps it&;s quite orange
0.06 but it&;s not orange at the moment it&;s
0.06 dried up and I think what that&;s done
0.06 has intensified some of the colors so it
0.06 didn&;t look too much as we were driving
0.06 past the the lake and not a lot of salt
0.06 lakes do look any good as you&;re just
0.06 driving past them but once you get the
0.06 drone up they become completely
0.06 different and and that&;s where you can
0.06 see all the colors and the textures but
0.06 what caught our eye on this particular
0.06 one is that we could see the tinges of
0.06 orange and Pink&;s and even reds in in
0.06 the lake and so I&;ve already had the the
0.06 drone up I&;ve had a bit of a scout
0.06 around that&;s what I tend to do on one
0.06 battery and then I&;ll save a second
0.06 battery for the the images so I&;ve now
0.06 just changed over batteries I&;ve got the
0.06 drone back up there and now where we&;re
0.06 flying over to where the Salt Lake is
0.06 so this is the Salt Lake here and as you
0.06 can see there&;s this quite interesting
0.06 little wash that I&;ve now just kind of
0.06 centered here in the image and it makes
0.06 for a really nice shot I&;m just trying
0.06 to play around a little bit with the
0.06 lines I&;ve got the side of the Salt Lake
0.06 kind of coming in from the right hand
0.06 corner there&;s a little bit of color
0.06 there I think I&;ll go and investigate
0.06 that a little bit more in a second you
0.06 go just turn around just a fraction
0.06 there you go so what I&;ve done here with
0.06 the composition is I&;ve got the line
0.06 coming in from the right hand side I&;ve
0.06 got this wash in the middle of my image
0.06 and there&;s some beautiful detail there
0.06 I&;ve got a little bit of bush in the
0.06 middle down at the bottom I&;ve got this
0.06 tree just on the top left-hand corner so
0.06 I think I&;ll just flip over from the
0.06 video and we&;ll go to the camera now as
0.06 you can see from the shutters from the
0.06 shutter button I&;ve got the camera
0.06 automatically in auto exposure
0.06 bracketing mode and so I take three
0.06 shots every time I take an image I&;m
0.06 happy with that composition so I&;m just
0.06 going to quickly take that now and then
0.06 I just might scoot around a little bit
0.06 more and see whether we can get some of
0.06 the other some of the other textures
0.06 here is quite it&;s quite a beautiful
0.06 little
0.06 a little Salt Lake here so I&;ve now just
0.06 moved around a little bit more
0.06 I just might move down a little bit so
0.06 I&;ve now got this wash in the in the
0.06 foreground which is kind of leading the
0.06 eye in and I&;m just kind of positioning
0.06 the drone so it&;s taking out any of the
0.06 farmland on either side I&;ve got some
0.06 bush some some of the bushes and trees
0.06 on the left-hand side and the right-hand
0.06 side and I&;m going to take that shot as
0.06 well because I quite like that also
0.06 [Music]
0.06 so one of the things that I started
0.06 doing when I was taking photos with the
0.06 drone was always having the camera
0.06 directly down we&;re definitely going to
0.06 take one that&;s directly down but I&;m
0.06 always trying to push myself a little
0.06 bit and bring the camera up a little bit
0.06 so that it&;s looking at the features add
0.06 a little bit of an angle really really
0.06 helpful out here with the Salt Lake&;s
0.06 because the Salt Lake&;s are so massive
0.06 have come bringing the camera up at a
0.06 bit of an angle means that I can get
0.06 more of the Salt Lake in the shot
0.06 okay so with that taken I&;m now going to
0.06 move down and closer and I am actually
0.06 going to bring the camera angle straight
0.06 down now look at that isn&;t that amazing
0.06 that is just incredible the amount of
0.06 details and all the cracks and the
0.06 colors you can see the colors there
0.06 right there&;s some you can see the Reds
0.06 there that that strong vein of red
0.06 coming through from the right-hand side
0.06 you can see tinges of Pink&;s just around
0.06 that then there&;s that that bluish area
0.06 gray blueish area that I think is
0.06 actually puddles of water still sitting
0.06 just on top of the salt bear so I just
0.06 think that that&;s that is just
0.06 magnificent now what I&;ve done with the
0.06 composition here is I&;m going for a
0.06 little bit more of an abstract
0.06 composition it it almost looks like this
0.06 is a painting I&;ve cut out a little bit
0.06 of the the wash in the bottom right hand
0.06 corner but I quite like that and then
0.06 I&;ve got so I&;ve got most of the wash in
0.06 the right hand coming up into the middle
0.06 and then I&;ve got these two brown areas
0.06 and they kind of balancing each other
0.06 out you can see that I&;ve put one in the
0.06 bottom left hand corner and one in the
0.06 top right hand corner and that&;s that&;s
0.06 on purpose that&;s to try and balance
0.06 this image out a little bit so I&;m happy
0.06 with that composition I&;m going to
0.06 quickly take that
0.06 [Music]
0.06 and then I might go down even closely
0.06 see I&;m only I&;m only 30 meters above
0.06 this Salt Lake and that&;s the other
0.06 thing that I kept on thinking was that I
0.06 had to go as high as I possibly can but
0.06 what you miss out on when you go really
0.06 really high is all of these fantastic
0.06 details but I&;m going to come down even
0.06 even even closer now and see whether I
0.06 can pick up some of the other details
0.06 which are in this in this lake look at
0.06 those cracks they are just amazing I&;m
0.06 not too sure I think I&;ll take a quick
0.06 image here where I&;ve just got that
0.06 brown bit just coming out through here
0.06 I&;ll take that not too sure where this
0.06 is going to work but then once I&;ve done
0.06 that I&;m going to just move across a
0.06 little bit here we go
0.06 I&;ll get this there we go hopefully
0.06 that&;s a little bit more balanced that
0.06 there I&;ll just shift it to the side so
0.06 again I&;ve got both those brown bits of
0.06 land balanced in the top right hand
0.06 corner in the bottom left hand corner
0.06 and then I&;ve got this sweeping bit of
0.06 salt the salt lake or the wash moving
0.06 from the right hand corner through to up
0.06 to the top and then round to the top
0.06 left hand corner so I&;m happy with that
0.06 shot as well so I&;ll just quickly take
0.06 that all so now what I also noticed over
0.06 here is I just bring this up a little
0.06 bit is look at that beautiful bit of
0.06 Salt Lake just there now I&;ve just
0.06 pulled it back a little bit and I&;ve
0.06 also I pulled the drone back a little
0.06 bit and I&;ve also lifted the angle of
0.06 the camera just up a little bit and
0.06 again I&;m just trying to make sure that
0.06 I&;m not always shooting down but that
0.06 I&;m shooting I&;m shooting a at an angle
0.06 so the it&;s not all the way up so if I
0.06 was to bring the camera all the way up
0.06 it would be the horizon would be
0.06 you know there so that&;s not what I want
0.06 so I want to bring it down so I&;m
0.06 bringing you down at an angle and I&;m
0.06 cutting out the the horizon because I
0.06 just don&;t think that that is going to
0.06 really give much to the image if you
0.06 like so I&;m bringing the edge of the
0.06 Salt Lake pretty much from the the
0.06 middle down the bottom slightly to the
0.06 right I&;m bringing it out further to the
0.06 right-hand side and then it swings
0.06 around and disappears in the top
0.06 left-hand corner so I&;ll make sure that
0.06 I&;m focused I&;ve all I got to make sure
0.06 that I&;m focused before I take the shot
0.06 so I just tap where I want to focus the
0.06 image I just might tap over over there
0.06 that&;s nice and then I&;ll grab that shot
0.06 [Music]
0.06 now as you can see there is a little bit
0.06 more color over here on the right look
0.06 at that that is just amazing and what&;s
0.06 really impressive is that color over in
0.06 the top left-hand corner as well so I&;m
0.06 going to leave that in the image and I&;m
0.06 quite happy with that kind of taking it
0.06 from the center and again I&;m taking the
0.06 edge of the lake straight up the center
0.06 and then curving it round to the
0.06 left-hand side so once that&;s focus I&;ll
0.06 take that shot
0.06 [Music]
0.06 and then quickly moving on actually
0.06 while we&;re here I might just drag drag
0.06 the camera down so it&;s right facing
0.06 right down and then I might take this
0.06 opportunity to just grab this shot here
0.06 again I&;m only 30 meters above 35 meters
0.06 above the above the basalt Lake here so
0.06 that&;s not too bad so I&;ve got a
0.06 combination of the bull and then the
0.06 edge of the lake and then you&;ve got the
0.06 Salt Lake there make sure that that is
0.06 focused and then I&;ll take that shot
0.06 [Music]
0.06 [Music]
0.06 and then I might pull the camera back up
0.06 again and now we&;re going to head off to
0.06 where this purple area is over here
0.06 because this looks really interesting so
0.06 for this shot I might pull up a little
0.06 bit because you can see how you can see
0.06 how large this wash is this is quite a
0.06 large wash fantastic so I&;m going to try
0.06 and keep the Salt Lake up a Salt Lake
0.06 they&;re coming around I&;m just messing
0.06 around with the orientation look at that
0.06 that that looks amazing I&;m really happy
0.06 with that I&;m going to come down a
0.06 little bit I&;m going to come across a
0.06 little bit now pretty much got the lake
0.06 I&;m aiming for it to roughly be in the
0.06 coming up from the bottom of the image
0.06 on the right hand third and then
0.06 disappearing pretty much on the center
0.06 on the left hand side and then you&;ve
0.06 got this wash that&;s come out this
0.06 little creek that&;s come out and all of
0.06 those features over on the right the top
0.06 right hand third so I&;m going to quickly
0.06 take that shot once I am focused
0.06 [Music]
0.06 as you can see we&;ve got plenty of wind
0.06 around both here on the ground and also
0.06 up in the air there so I&;m trying to
0.06 move as quickly as I possibly can we&;ll
0.06 see whether we can just move around a
0.06 little bit and get that image again
0.06 maybe like this this looks like quite a
0.06 interesting little shot here
0.06 [Applause]
0.06 mmm not too sure what to do here I&;m
0.06 gonna try and take that I&;m gonna try to
0.06 take the bush out on the top right on
0.06 top left-hand corner and actually maybe
0.06 I&;ll just put a little bit of Bush in
0.06 there I might crop that out later in
0.06 post but how&;s that for slightly a
0.06 different shot now I&;m moving up to
0.06 around about 90 meters so I do actually
0.06 move up and down and and try and see
0.06 whether I can get different levels of
0.06 detail
0.06 [Music]
0.06 I&;m gonna start bringing it back down
0.06 again because I think there is another
0.06 shot here that might look quite nice
0.06 just having a quick look at my battery
0.06 I&;m down to just under 40 percent so I
0.06 just need to move a little bit quick
0.06 here so what I&;m going to do here is
0.06 I&;ve got this nice little bend that I
0.06 think what I&;ll do is I&;ll leave it kind
0.06 of in the center and moving away to the
0.06 right disappearing on that top top right
0.06 hand third and and then there&;s all
0.06 these patterns and wisps of salt that is
0.06 has obviously dried up on me on the bed
0.06 there so I&;ll focus that and then take
0.06 that shot there
0.06 [Music]
0.06 [Music]
0.06 all right there is a beautiful little
0.06 spot here that I just want to try and
0.06 zoom in and get a little bit of a
0.06 subtlety of the colors here and maybe
0.06 bring up some of some other detail there
0.06 we go
0.06 what I&;m going to do is I&;m going to try
0.06 and split that right down the middle so
0.06 this will end up probably being perhaps
0.06 portrait maybe I&;ll leave it in
0.06 landscape I&;m not 100% sure but it&;s got
0.06 a nice little bend to it and I just like
0.06 how there&;s so much detail and texture
0.06 in the bottom half which is quite dark
0.06 with the texture being light and then in
0.06 the top half the background is light and
0.06 the texture is is darker and of course
0.06 I&;ve got this rule this vein of red so
0.06 again I&;ll take that shot
0.06 [Music]
0.06 I&;m actually really happy with with that
0.06 shot there and I&;m only 26 meters above
0.06 the salt lake so I&;m actually quite
0.06 quite close
0.06 [Music]
0.06 so yeah I think with that I might have a
0.06 quick bit more of a look around see
0.06 whether I can find anything else before
0.06 I need to bring the drone in and and
0.06 check out some of the images just before
0.06 I show you some of the other images that
